Studio Production: Promotional Poster

The first step in creating the promotional poster involved deciding on the best and most suitable image from my photoshoot. After looking at the quality, suitability and overall appearance of each photo taken, I decided on the image below...

I found that this photo was the most exciting image to look at, nicely angled and expressive of the characters in the show and their personalities. I then moved forward with the steps of editing the image and creating the poster on Adobe Photoshop...
  • Slowly cutting around the image of Tabitha and Mr Button using the magnetic lasso tool in detail to achieve the below result...
(with a transparent background in Photoshop)
  • Placing the lasso'd image over the blackboard template image previously created by the DOP
  • Removing the chalk item from the blackboard template by stamping and blending other parts of the blackboard over this
  • Resizing the blackboard image to have the wooden frame smaller, avoiding this taking up too much of the poster
  • Moving the image of Tabitha and Mr Button to the right of the poster and rotated very slightly to the right, allowing for text to be placed around their image
  • Lassoing the inside of Tabitha's magnifying glass to have it be magnifying the blackboard image behind her, instead of the white wall that was behind them in the shoot
  • Slightly brightening the blackboard inside the magnifying glass to give a glassy look and adding a painted on white shine to the glass
  • Blurring, darkening and blending the edges of Tabitha and Mr Button to blend in smoothly with the blackboard image
  • Brightening the image of Tabitha and Mr Button along with intensifying it's contrast and vibrancy to make the image's colours stand out
  • Painting on a low opacity shadow behind Tabitha and Mr Button, to give the impression that they are slightly 3D and stood in front of the blackboard, rather than being a flat image where they are a part of the background
  • Adding the Teach 'Em A Lesson logo in the official Rudiment font, along with the detail of it being a UCA production, it's location and it's time
  • Adding the UCA logo, a black font, transparent background image from Google that that I recoloured in white

After making all of the above changes and adding the above effects, my result of the promotional poster was this...

After receiving feedback from our course tutor, the only changes that needed to be made for the final version were adding the word 'Television' to 'A UCA Production 2016', 'Recorded live' to 'At Maidstone Studios' and adding a tagline to the poster.

As a tagline hadn't been created for the show yet, I discussed this with the producer and we decided to create one together. We agreed that it needed to be short and sweet, and communicate the fact that it's a new show, made for children and is about real teacher's having to go back to school. Our final result for the tagline is now...

"The brand new kids show that sends your teachers back to school!"

After reviewing the final poster with my tutor after making the required changes, the official Teach 'Em A Lesson Poster is the result below...

The only thing I think that I would do differently for the promotional poster would be to create three, the above poster, one that features just Tabitha and one that features just Mr Button if time had permitted to create three separate posters.

I'm extremely happy with the final result of the poster, I feel that my previous experience with Photoshop for projects at school allowed me to know the correct tools to use to effectively create a professional appearing poster. I think it expresses the theme of the show extremely well.
